OVERVIEW

Tübingen is one of the oldest university cities in Germany and has a very good academic reputation. Founded in 1477 on the banks of the Neckar River it is steeped in tradition and culture. A quarter of the city’s population are students, a fact that results in a great party atmosphere and a dynamic pace of life.

The picture above is taken from the Neckarbrücke, one of many bridges over the river Neckar, which runs through Tübingen. During the summer, lots of people enjoy riding a boat or Stocherkahn (a long, small punting boat).

From the Neckarbrücke you can also reach the Neckarinsel (Neckar island), where you can take a walk along the beautiful plane tree alley and occasionally enjoy a concert or theater play.

In the city center there are many well preserved historical buildings, which have not been destroyed during the two World Wars. Narrow lanes are the dominant type of street in this part of town, so be sure to bring not only your high heels! ;)

UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS

Approximately 1.500 beds, including our day clinic facilities, are available in our 17 Hospitals. Specialist outpatient clinics and surgeries, polyclinics, interdisciplinary centers and institutes for health-care support comprehensive and interdepartmental diagnosis, therapy and follow-up treatment. Almost 62.000 patients come to us annually for in-patient treatment. Approximately a further 300.000 patients are treated in the outpatient clinics, specialist surgeries and polyclinics.

Together with the university clinics, the preclinical and scientific institutes and the clinical and theoretical departments, the Faculty of Medicine is one of the largest institutions for medical training and higher education in Baden-Württemberg. Approximately 2.900 students are studying human-medicine or oral medicine in Tübingen, or are taking the masters and postgraduate degree course in neuroscience and behavioral science.

As a centre for science and research, Tübingen occupies a leading position worldwide. This is due to the Institutes of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital and the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research. Thanks to the attractive research projects and special promotion programs, the Faculty's scientists have been able to acquire every year numerous sponsors from Foundations and Research Promotion Organizations for their work.

BOARDING
You will have the possibility to use a fridge and cook in your accommodation. In Germany supermarkets are closed on Sundays, remember to buy food in advance. Restaurants, fast food shops and some bakeries are open all week.
LODGING

You will be accommodated either in a (mixed gender) student dorm, a flat share or a host family. You will have your own room and share bathroom and kitchen with the other flat mates. Since there are so many students in Tübingen, it is difficult to find proper accommodation for such a short period of time. Therefore, it might be possible that we can not inform you about your accommodation until 1-2 weeks before your arrival.

TRANSPORTATION
Tübingen has a very advanced bus system, so you can regularly use busses to reach the hospitals and the main city. You will get a student ticket which is valid for a whole month on every bus of the city services. Since it is a student ticket you always have to take your student ID of your home university. During the week after 13:15 and on weekends and holidays you can use all busses and trains in the surrounding area (see naldo plan). On request we can try to offer bikes what you might need to pay for. To travel around Germany you can use trains or cheaper long distance busses.
SOCIAL PROGRAM
Welcome and Farewell dinner; we can offer trips and activities on the weekends, if you have special wishes or own plans you can tell us in advance and we can help you organizing; occasionally events during the week (e.g.. concerts, dinner,…)
