OVERVIEW
Cologne, in German "Köln", in North-Rhine-Westphalia in the west of Germany is the country's fourth biggest city with a population of about one million. The city is located about 100 kilometers from the Netherlands and Belgium and about 150kilometers from Luxembourg. The rhine river is one of the most important waterways of Europe. The city is also the biggest railway-hub in Germany and has the biggest container-port in the country. This shows how important Cologne is in the national and international transport of goods.

Cologne is well known as an attractive party city, for its cultural highlights, for its friendly inhabitants, their tolerant and happy mentality and the famous beer of the region. One major attraction is the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) wich is with 157,38 meters fall the third tallest church in the world.

The University of Cologne is one of the biggest in Germany. Over all, Colonge has about 90.000 students living here with about half of them at the University of Cologne itself and half of them enrolled in other universities / colleges across the city. The University of Cologne has also Europe's biggest medical library (the second largest in the world!).

One of the craziest times in the city of Cologne is the carneval which takes place in spring, about six weeks before easter every year. During that time you will be able to experience the "Colgone-mentality" in a very special way! :-)

UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS
Professional Exchange:
Usually all incomings get placed at the University Hospital of Cologne.

Postal address:
Klinikum der Universität zu Köln
Kerpener Str. 62
50924 Köln

If you have any questions regarding your exchange, please contact us instead of the hospital!

However, it may be possible that some students get placed in another hospital within Cologne, but this is not the standard. If you've been accepted for a professional exchange and would like to be placed in a certain hospital, let us know and we will see what we can do
RESEARCH PROJECTS AND LABS
We have a number of very interesting research projects to offer in different research labs of the Medical College and we are continously working on recruiting new projects. So have a look into the database ;)
BOARDING
You will receive boarding money from bvmd Germany
LODGING
Usually you will be placed at student accommodations during your stay. You will have your own room and most likely a shared kitchen and bathroom.
Unfortunately we cannot tell you where exactly you will be staying until a few weeks before your exchange, but usually it is very close to the hospital and transportation in Cologne is easy.
TRANSPORTATION
Around Cologne:

Colonge is a great basis for day trips or also for some trips over night. The closest cities are Bonn to the south and Düsseldorf to the north, both about a 30-minute train ride away. But there are many other cities in the region worth seeing. Just a few examples are Aachen (about 1 hour by train) and the highly populated area by the Ruhr (about 1-1,5 hours by train).

Possible international weekend destinations could be the Netherlands, Belgium or Luxembourg (all about 2-3 hours by train).

If you would rather enjoy the quieteness of the nature instead of the big city you can go on a trip to the beautifull Eifel-region south of Cologne or cycle along the Rhine.
