Vila Velha is a coastal town in Espírito Santo, Brazil. It lies across from Vitória, the state capital. Its population was 486.388 (2017) and its area is 208.82 km².

Vila Velha forms part of the Greater Vitória metropolitan area. To the north is Vitória, capital of the state of Espirito Santo, to the west Cariacica and Viana, to the south Guarapari, with its beautiful beaches and to the east the Atlantic Ocean.

Notable corporations in Vila Velha include Garoto, one of Brazil's largest chocolate manufacturers.

Vila Velha has been through several years of intense real estate development and several luxury buildings are now a common sight in all of its main beaches. Some critics argue that this practice can be considered excess urbanization of a previously low-profile area, despite the economic benefits.

The Deputy Darcy Castelo de Mendonça Bridge, known as Third Bridge (Portuguese: Terceira Ponte), is the second tallest bridge in Brazil, connecting and reducing the distance between the cities of Vila Velha and Vitória, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful sights on the city.

Universidade de Vila Velha
Hospital e Maternidade São Luiz

UVV´s medical course started in February 2007 and works on Campus Nossa Senhora da Penha in Vila Velha. The campus is divided into Biopractices and Bioagrarian, and serves indirectly to eight courses in the health field: Medicine, Life Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Nutrition and Psychology while Bioagrarian welcomes courses of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. On the campus, are located Polyclinic, the Veterinary Hospital and the facilities of 14 laboratories serving disciplines in the areas of Biomedical and Agricultural. Medicine students have also Semiology laboratories, where, since the beginning of the course, they can develop skills of communication and semiotics. Computer Labs and multidisciplinary laboratories, such as human anatomy, histology, microbiology and physiology are also available. Besides the central library, medical students have a super lab morphofunctional laboratory available to study, and modern semiology equipment and rich models, which enables you to see in practice what one sees in the theory. The medical school has an excellent interaction with the community through the polyclinic and health units. The Polyclinic is attached to the campus and serves the local community and other cities. The service is done by students and college professors, and works in different areas, being a center of reference in ENT, Pediatric mental health and physiotherapy. In practice of the community health, the university uses health units, which are contracted out by the Municipal Health Department, and receives, in each unit, a group of ten students. These students are accompanied by a teacher of the institution, which assists in community service.

The Hospital

The medical internship of the University of Vila Velha (UVV) is held in state and municipal hospitals from greater Vitoria and countryside municipalities. The areas of the obligatory internship are divided into 5 main areas: General Practice, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Public Health. Complemented with Urgency and Emergency, Emergency Department and rural internship. We currently have the following hospitals: Hospital Of Antonio Bezerra Farias: Operates in areas of low, medium and high complexity. It covers mainly the areas of general surgery and general practice. Maternal and Child Vila Velha (Himaba): It covers mainly the areas of obstetrics and pediatrics and neonatology. Hospital dos ferroviários (Railway Workers Hospital): Located in the city of Velha Vila. The work of students in internship is focused on general practice and surgery , covering several areas. The rural internship is conducted at the Hospital Foundation and Social Welfare of Domingos Martins (FHASDOMAR), allows the academic to live with the beauties and problems of rural areas. It is important the contact with the rural areas for the academic qualification. In rural areas, the academic gets to deal with situations which are difficult to be encountered in urban areas. Orthopaedics are studied at the Accidented Clinic of Vitoria Hospital (Clínica dos Acidentados de Vitoria), where specific care in orthopaedics is given to patients. Cases are mostly about car crashes and household accidents.
