According to the 2010 Census, Ribeirão Preto was the eighth largest municipality in the state. The population is 666,323 (2015 est.) in an area of 650.9 km². It is situated 313 km (194 mi) from the city of São Paulo and 706 km (439 mi) from Brasília, the federal capital. Its mean altitude is 546.8 meters high (1,794 ft). The city’s average temperature throughout the year is 23,2 °C (73,75F) and the predominant original vegetation is the Atlantic forest.
The city was originated around 1856 in an agricultural region. Coffee was a primary source of income until 1929, when it lost value compared with the industrial sector. In the second half of the 20th century, investments in areas such as health,biotechnology, bioenergy and information technology led to the city being declared a Technological Center in 2010. These activities have caused the city to have the 30th biggest GNP in Brazil.
In addition to its economic importance, the city is also an important cultural center. The Prefeito Luiz Roberto Jábali Park, the Maurilio Biagi Park and the Zoo Garden are important preservation areas, while the Pinguim Choperia, the Dom Pedro Theatre and projects as the Ribeirão Preto’s Cinema Center are relevant sightseeing points, along with such cultural events as the Agrishow and the National Book Fair.
Ribeirao Preto University was the first institution of superior education in the region of Ribeirao Preto. It was funded on 1st of July, 1924, as School of Pharmacy and Odontology of Ribeirao Preto. The medicine course was opened in 1998, and its divided in 12 stages during 6 years.
The Electro Bonini Hospital is installed in the University campus, and it is referency in the secondary assistance in the region. It recently opened the Cidinha Bonini Maternity, which has an average of 70 deliveries per month, wherein 70% are vaginal and 30% are caesarean. The hospital counts on a human reproduction center which performs highly complex procedures in assisted reproduction.
The students also act in primary assistance through SUS (sistema único de saúde – the Brazilian public health system) in several cities around Ribeirao Preto. Furthermore, the university has cooperation agreement with many hospital in the city, like: Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital, Santa Lydia Hospital and Santa Tereza Hospital.
The medicine course in the Ribeirao Preto University uses the PBL (Problem Based Learning) methodology and counts with several laboratories, as anatomy and microscopy at Morphofunctional Laboratory, Medical Skills Laboratory, Surgical Technique Laboratory and a Vivarium
They will have their own bed and will be provided with one bathroom that can be shared or not, and internet acess, on the house or on the college.
There is public transport at Ribeirao Preto with bus only. The price of one ticket for the bus is R$3,30. There is no subway or train station, but there are affordable taxi work.

To arrive at Ribeirao the incoming student can come from Sao Paulo by bus, which takes about 5 hours, or airplane, about 1 hour only. There is one airport for domestic flights (international flights are being studied) located at 18 km from downtown.
Stadiuns and Soccer Clubs: Ribeirão Preto has two professional soccer clubs: Botafogo and Comercial, both with their own stadiums.
Street Market: criated in 1978, in Ribeirao Preto center the street Market is open every weekend and holidays. With more than 150 artisans the street market owns a great variety of products, such as: ceramic, leather, metal, glass, personal adornment, porcelain, weaving, dried flowers, straw arrangements, vases, textiles and etc.
Historical Museum and Ordem Geral Plínio Travassos dos Santos: situated in the old Monte Alegre Farm for 54 years, the historical museum has the mission to preserve, rganize and give acces to documentations, bibliographies and colections about the Ribeirao Preto History.
Francisco Schimidt’Coffee Historical Museum: built in the fifties, the Coffee Museum is known for guarding the most important pieces of the history of coffee in São Paulo.
Parks: the city possess a lot of great parks and groves, such as Prefeito Luiz Roberto Jábali Park, the Maurílio Biagi Park, the Dr. Luís Carlos Raya Park and the Zoo Fábio de Sá Barreto.
Malls: the city has four malls: Iguatemi, Santa Úrsula, Novo Shopping e Ribeirão Shopping, they possess a great variety of stores, restaurants and cinema.
Pinguim Bar: awarder as the most tastiest chopp in Brazil, the establishment Pinguim has become a postcard downtown. With an imposing architecture from the XX century, it offers more thant ten different kind of chopps.
Pedro II Theater : situated near the Pinguim Bar, it has the same architecture as it has etstheater performances throughout the year.
Brewery: the city hosts three craft breweries (Colorado, Invicta, Walfänger and Lund) that open their facilities for visitors who are interested for great beers.
Restaurants and Pubs: a big variety of restaurants and pubs can be found in Ribeirão Preto, with great tipical Brazilian food and wordwide plates.
Anual Events: grand events chose the city to be their host, one of the most famous are the agricultural fair AGRISHOW, rodeos, the car race StockCar, concerts and etc.
