São Luís is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The city is located on São Luís Island in the Baía de São Marcos.

São Luís has many cultural peculiarities. It is known for its tiles which most buildings in the historical centre are covered in. The historical centre was made a UNESCO world heritage in 1997 and there has been an extensive program to restore and renovate the colonial era building. We also have a big variety of typical dances, such as Tambor de crioula, Bumba meu Boi and cacuriá. All of those are well seen on our Junine Festival, in June and July.

With more than five decades, the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) has contributed to the development of the State of Maranhão, training professionals in various areas of knowledge, at undergraduate and graduate, conducting research and technological innovations geared to the main problems of the State and the Region, and developing outreach activities covering acts of social organization, production, human resources training and appreciation of the culture of Maranhão.

The city of São Luís has three federal health establishments, 16 state, 52 public and 212 private. The main public hospitals are: the Municipal Hospital Marques Djalma (Socorrão I), the Municipal Hospital Clementino Moura (Socorrão II), the University Hospital of the Federal University of Maranhão - Units Presidente Dutra and Maternal and Child; Getúlio Vargas Hospital; Carlos Macieira Hospital, Children's Hospital Juvêncio Matos; Santa Casa Hospital; Hospital Sarah (formerly Sarah Kubitschek Hospital); Marly Sarney Maternity; Motherhood Benedito Leite and Women's Hospital.

The city is served by the Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport.

There are 184 bus lines operating in the metropolitan area, served by a fleet of more than 3,000 buses. More than 500,000 people use the bus system every day. The metropolitan area has a network of alternative transportation that works with drivers who usually have their own coach and organize themselves into cooperatives to enable them to provide the public transport service duly legalized in the department of city traffic.

The city has also an efficient radio system with more than 2000 taxi cabs accredited.

Sao Luis is home to a port that receives boats that carry passengers across to the city of Alcantara, which is located in the metropolitan area. It also has another port that receives ferries carrying people and cars that are destined for cities in the region of the state known as the low lands.

Being an island, the city has only one way out by ground, the bridge of the Estreito dos Mosquitos, which links the island of Sao Luis to the main land by road BR-135.

Our LC has worked hard to have an organized social program. We always try to have at least three trips/tours. Some of those are:

a)    Meeting São Luís’ historical centre.

The historical centre was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1997, for its Portuguese colonial architecture, that was adapted to the local climate. The buildings of the town are disposed on the rectangular grid of streets laid out in the 17th century. The private houses are built round courtyards, and the most outstanding examples have tiled roofs; facades faced with Portuguese azulejos or painted, ornamented cornices; tall, narrow window bays with decorated surrounds; and balconies with forged or cast-iron railings.

b)    Meeting neighboring cities. (Ribamar, Raposa and Panaquatira).

          São José de Ribamar is 30km away from São Luís. Located at the West of the island, it’s a calm and welcoming city that has in its natural landscapes the touristic appeal, full of beautiful and peaceful beaches. It’s also known for the religious tourism, that made the city one of the most important sanctuaries of the North-Northeast of Brazil.

Raposa is an alternative destination for those who visit São Luís. Its primary attractions are the trips to the beaches and dunes in the region, which has a mangrove ecosystem similar to the Amazonia canals. You’ll also be able to appreciate the typical Maranhense gastromy and handicraft, since most of the inhabitants in Raposa live for the fishing and the craftwork.

          The beaches are very relaxing and exuberant, and the tourists show great interest and curiosity, for the beach looks like a big desert when the tide is low. With the time, this beach has become a great refugee for those who like to run away from the stressing life of the bigger cities.

c)    Trip to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

          A magical desert of white sand and blue lagoons with fishes. The responsible for this unique landscape? The rain! The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park was created in 1981, it embraces 155.000 hectares of dunes, rivers, lagoons and mangroves. There are two possible sceneries, depending on the time of the year. During the drought it becomes a huge desert bathed by the ocean. On rainy time it forms the classical landscape with the dunes and lagoons. It’s an unique experience, to explore all that immensity of sand!

d)    Trip to Alcântara

Known as "the city that stopped in the time", Alcantara saves a set of over 300 colonial buildings - many in ruins, such the Matriz de São Matias, postcard of the town. Houses, churches and palaces are legacies of the town's gold period in the 18th century. It peaked with crops of sugarcane and cotton. Some old houses that belonged to the barons still display boasting of brands such as iron balconies, lookouts and tiles brought from Portugal.

e)    Trip to Morros

Morros is a small town which is 100 km from São Luis. Its main sights are the Una and Munim rivers, which attract many tourists from the Maranhao State.The river Una has clear water that invite everyone to a bath with nice and cool temperature.

f)    Trip to Chapada das Mesas

The Chapada das Mesas National Park in southern Maranhão is a paradise where the contact with nature and tranquility of the towns in the area make a good recipe to relieve stress and have fun. On site, the vegetation springs un in unlikely places and the nature is revealed in the blue water, the color of the sky. A script of Ecoturism that impresses visitors all the year.

The city has a colonial architectural heritage valued at about 3500 buildings, spread over 220 acres of historic center, with most of them mansions with lookouts and Portuguese tiles, buildings of the nineteenth century, which brought special peculiarity to São Luís: Brazilian capital with the largest number of homes in traditional Portuguese style and more homogeneous set of Latin America.

Currently, the main open to visitors in São Luís tourist attractions are: the Arthur Azevedo Theater; the Palace of the Lions - fortification built by the French neoclassical style today after several reforms, current headquarters of the State Government; Museum of Visual Arts Center Popular Culture Domingos Vieira Filho; Artistic and Historical Museum of Maranhao; Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory - Church Cathedral; Convent of Mercy; Sacred Art Museum; La Ravardière Palace - City Hall; Fountain of Ribeirão Palace Christ the King among others.

The beaches of São Luís are other popular attractions for tourists visiting the city. The main beaches of São Luís are:

• Praia Ponta d'Areia ("Ponta d'Areia Beach"): is the most visited by the population, due to easy access. It is just three kilometers from the city center. It is known for its concentration of Reggae festivals in the region;
Resultado de imagem para letreiro são luís
• Praias de São Marcos e do Calhau ("St. Mark and Pebble Beaches"): are located next to each other. Offer numerous choices of bars and restaurants. Stand-by bustling nightlife and the practice of physical activities on the extensive boardwalk that divide;

Escultura "Os Pescadores", Praia de São Marcos ("The Fishermen" sculpture, St. Mark Beach).

• Praia do Olho d'Água ("Eye Water Beach"): located 13 kilometers from the city center. It is surrounded by dunes and scrub;

• Praias do Meio e do Araçagi ("Beaches of the Middle and Araçagi"): located in another county of Grand Isle Maranhão, but still in the metropolitan area. Are sought by swimmers and kite surfers on weekends.

You must be aware that not everyone in São Luís speaks English. Most of the population can’t and not everyone at the hospital will be able to communicate. However, Maranhenses are well known for their hospitality, so most of us will try to communicate and to make you feel comfortable and at home.
