Mexico City (Ciudad de México) was originally built as Tenochtitlan by the Aztecs in 1325 on an island of Lake Texcoco. Our city, the largest city in Mexico, is the capital of the country and the seat of the federal government. Mexico City is also considered a global city. Located in the Valley of Mexico at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 ft), the city consists of sixteen boroughs. According to the federal and state governments, the Mexico City metropolitan area population is 21.2 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in the Americas and the third largest agglomeration in the world.
HOSPITAL JUAREZ DE MEXICO: In the war of 1847 with the United States, it is necessary to have blood hospitals that cared for the wounded. With this aim in mind, General Manuel María Lombardini places at the disposal of the councilor of hospitals of the Metropolitan City Hall of the capital of Mexico, the graduate Mr. José Urbano Fonseca, the building of the College of the Augustinians of San Pablo, which until then functioned as barracks. Then it was called as San Pablo Hospital. Before the death of the Benemérito de las Américas, the lawyer Benito Juárez, which took place on July 18, 1872, the then city councilor of Mexico City, García López, proposed that the San Pablo Hospital change its name to Hospital Juárez, which the town council approves the next day, July 19.
Achievements in Medicine:
*In 1871 Dr. Luis Hidalgo Carpio performed the first extirpation of the anus and a portion of the rectum perineally throughout the Americas.
*The same doctor, Luis Hidalgo Carpio, performed the first ligature of the omentum in the hernias of said membrane in the history of mankind.
*In 1857 Dr. José María Barcelo de Villagrán performed the construction of an artificial anus in the left groin, the first of its kind in Latin America and preceded in America only by the father of American medicine, surgeon Philip Syng.
*On August 13, 1864, the same José María Barcelo de Villagrán, carried out for the first time in America a shoulder resection.
*On May 11, 1864, Dr. José María Barcelo de Villagrán, practiced for the first time in Latin America a coxo-femoral disarticulation.
These achievements help to consider the period from 1869 to 1880 as the Golden Age of Surgery in Mexico. Other important events in the history of medicine in Mexico occurred at the Hospital Juárez (or Hospital San Pablo), are:
*In 1860 Dr. Barcelo de Villagrán performed, just for the second time in all of America, a blood transfusion.
The first Mexican radiography was taken on October 1, 1896 (already known then as Hospital Juárez) by Dr. Tobias Nuñez.
*In 1942 the first blood bank in Mexico was established.
*In the 1940s, the first bone bank in Mexico was founded.
HOSPITAL GENERAL “LA VILLA” was built during the presidency of Adolfo López Mateos, thus being the first hospital in the north of Mexico City. Its inauguration was in 1964. In 1987 it changed its name to the real, but the population continues to know it as ";Villa Emergencies".
It has a capacity of 150 beds and 15 offices,
The area of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the Column Clinic was inaugurated on August 14, 2014 at the La Villa General Hospital.
Services: Emergency, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Column Clinic, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Intermedium Therapy
1. Immunological and biochemical characterization of allergenic antigens from pollen
There is a worldwide increase in atopic diseases; although the reasons for this increase
are unclear, allergen exposure is recognized as an important environmental risk factor in
genetically predisposed individuals. The diagnosis of allergic disease requires a detailed
history, physical examination, and allergy testing, i.e., skin testing or the in vitro
determination of allergen-specific IgE. Allergen extracts are biological products that are
administered to humans to diagnose, prevent and treat allergic diseases.
2. Phytochemicals of Mexican medicinal plants: chemical characterization and molecular
evaluation of the therapeutic potential against breast cancer
Breast cancer represents the highest mortality rate worldwide. Chemotherapy is the most
common treatment which uses a combination of different anticancer drugs. However,
these drugs produce side effects and resistance; so, new research is necessary to find
new natural compounds that can reduce side effects. Mexican medicinal plants represent
a big source of potential compounds by the traditional knowledge and use such as the
diversity of their flora. In this moment we are working particularly with Arantho. This is a
plant used in traditional medicine and it induced cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells. So, the
objective of the work is to evaluate the anticancer activity of the essential oil of Arantho
(EO) at in vitro and in vivo and to identify the compound or compounds that induce the cell
death through biochemical, cellular and molecular biology techniques
At least one meal will be provided from Monday to Friday at the hosting house or at the hospital.
Accommodation is with a Mexican family, they provide lodging, meals and other cultural and social activities. That means a great opportunity to know more about the Mexican culture. We try the house where our incoming students lodge is not so far from the hospital, however sometimes it is not possible, but moving around the city is very easy and cheap thanks to the means of transportation, so there’s no problem.
Also, we will try to accomodate students together into a students flat, for them to be able to interact better between one another, this will be close to the hospital and/or the university to guarantee the student’s security.
Mexico City has a lot of means of transportation! We have basically a connection to every
point of the city, this being either by public transport (Metro, Metrobus, public buses,
trolleybus) or by services like taxi or similars, such as Uber, EasyTaxi, among others.
- Mexican culture is very diverse. Remember to always be comprehensive and respectful
- If you are going to arrive earlier or stay longer please contact us before you arrive.
– Enjoy everything Mexico has to offer!
