Most patients in Japan cannot speak English therefore the communication between patients may be done in Japanese. However, the tutors or Japanese students will translate and help you.
Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.
Required level of studies
You MUST pass all of the exams until your exchange starts, and be certified as a student doctor.

Even if accepted by the hosting country, students must be still enrolled in university by the time the Application Form is sent.

Academic Quality

Students are highly recommended to bring their own logbooks and hand them to their hosting professors on the 1st day of their clerkship.

More than 80 percent of the attendance is compulsory in order to receive Certificate.

Students cannot receive Certificate unless they fill in the Evaluation form.

Cities Remarks
There is a zone system in Japan. You can only choose certain LCs a limited number of times in your application form. This is because the spots in Tokyo, Osaka and surrounding areas are limited and many students apply for those cities. If you want to be placed in those cities, please apply early.
  • You can only choose zone 1 LCs once:

The student should bring 50,000 yen to Japan, and pay it to the LEO directly.
We accept ONLY Japanese yen.

Visa requirements
If you need Japanese visa, apply for TOURIST VISA. You don't need work visa nor study visa for IFMSA exchange.
For the students from visa-exempt countries (90 days), you don't have to apply for visa, but if you are from Thailald, Indonesia, or Brunei, the visa-exempt period is 15 days, therefore you have to apply for tourist visa as well.
For the citizens from Russia, CIS countries, Georgia, the visa application process is very complicated, so you should apply early in order to obtain visa on time.
If you are from Africa or the Middle East, it usually takes long time to get visa, so you should apply for visa early as well.

Upon Arrival documents

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
The student MUST get several vaccinations. They are listed below.

Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella

Also, some LCs ask other vaccinations, too.

Insurance

As IFMSA-Japan, we require health insurance and liability insurance. However, these insurance CANNOT be arranged in our country, and should be arranged in your home country.
Also, we do not ask for malpractice insurance and travel insurance thus the exchange student is not required to be issued for malpractice insurance and travel insurance. They should be arranged in your home country if wanted, we do not have this type of insurance in our country.

Health insurance: It covers expenses linked to health issues (if you have to see a doctor and buy drugs on prescription)

Since we need to follow a lot of procedures in order to accept the international student within our LCs, it may not be possible to change the department for the substitutions.
In this case, the substitution would be accepted in the department which we arranged for the student who cancelled his/her exchange.
