A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.

Working hours may vary among different departments
  • Scrubs and slippers will be provided by the hospital for students in the Surgery ward
  • Formal clothing must be worn at all times during the clerkship in the hospital. Casual wear/footwear such as jeans, T-shirts, sports shoes, sandals and so forth are NOT allowed
  • Male: clean and pressed collared shirt, tie, dark trousers and dress shoes
  • Female: blouse or smart top, knee-length skirts/dark trousers/smart dresses and dress shoes
  • Hair: Neat and clean, not covering face
  • No excessive jewellery
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited within the University Campus and Hospital

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK): placement availability varies among different departments.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU): recommended places in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medicine, Surgery and Paediatrics from early July till mid-August, but there is no guarantee. Other departments are may also be available but also NOT GUARANTEED.

Hepatitis B carriers can do electives as long as they don’t carry out any “exposure prone procedures”, so it is not advisable for a student to apply to one of the departments where this is required, e.g. Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology etc.

Boarding and lodging is not provided to any company with the exchangee (e.g. relatives or friends), and will only be provided for the specified period of attachment dates (of exactly 4 weeks).

Payment details for unilateral fee
We do not accept unilateral contracts. However, should the need for a unilateral fee arise under unforseen circumstances, we will email the student the payment details before the exchange.
Visa requirements
  • Invitation letters and other documents can be provided upon request.
  • PLEASE make sure the applicants apply for STUDY VISA as soon as the exchange is confirmed (at least 2 months before arrival)
  • Accepted students will be given instructions for Visa applications before the commencement of the exchange.

Upon Arrival documents

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
  • Vaccination for Chickenpox is important because you may be handling patients with poor immunity in the wards during the elective period. Chickenpox infection can be fatal for these patients. It is thus necessary for you to establish immunity against Chickenpox before your elective attachment starts.

Year of studies:
Students must be in their clinical years. We do NOT accept pre-clinical students, or graduate students.

Documents:

  • Hard copies of the application package must be received by NEOs prior to the AF deadline, with all documents accurately and correctly arranged (in a clear folder)Please mail us your application packages as EARLY as possible. From previous years, about 1 out of 5 applications were unsuccessful due to delayed submission of the necessary documents.
  • Please read our document *[AMSAHK] Special Requirements for AF* CAREFULLY. Any missing or incorrect documents will only result in your application being rejected/delayed.
  • We highly appreciate students who follow the SCOPE Communication Guidelines :)
